Add an External Search Provider in SAP NWBC 3.5

By Rahul Manoj Mahajan, John Deere India

Introduction:

In this article, we will see the simple steps on adding the External Search Providers in SAP NWBC 3.5.

Prerequisite: User must have installed the SAP GUI and SAP NWBC 3.5 on their desktop in order to login on it. Also, a basic understanding on SAP NWBC will be helpful to understand this article.

Details:

As most of us know that the basic purpose of SAP NWBC is to having all the required applications, traditional SAP transaction at a single platform. It has come up with very good feature called Search Provider.

By default NWBC will load a list of search engines from the server if configured. However, it is also possible to locally configure additional search engines that can then be used exactly in the same way as the other search engines integrated (for example the desktop search). For each search provider, it is only possible to define the startup URL that should be called with the query string. Such a search engine will then be started in a new window.

Let’s look into more details by configuring the external search provider in SAP NWBC 3.5.

Login into NWBC Client (See article link for how to login to SAP NWBC 3.5)

It will open the initial screen with the folders added on a shell of NWBC. Please see the below screenshot. Added folder Test Tcodes is visible on shell. (If you have already configured one R3 system for NWBC)

Now click on Settings -> Connections -> Search Providers…

It will open the pop up screen as follows.

Click on New button and fill the required fields.

Click OK. It has added the Google search of SAP Technical.com in your NWBC client.

Let’s search something and see how it uses the search engine for it.

Click on Search button and it should open the search engine.

Important point to be noted here is URL for the search provider must be the exact Search URL.

Use the sequence {0} within the URL to mark the position where the search string should be placed. For example: http://www.google.co.in/search?q={0}

In this way you can configure the external search provider for SAP NWBC. This is very useful feature and can be used while performing our day to day job.
